USING THE SLAVE CYLINDER TO DETERMINE CLUTCH WEAR

By measuring the distance that the clutch piston is extended, one can gauge the thickness of the clutch disc. The thicker the disc, the more collapsed the pressure plates spring fingers and the further extended the slave piston is. A new clutch will show a piston extension of about 9 mm

A worn disc will allow the pressure plate fingers to extend and thus shorten the extension of the slave piston. When that extension gets to 2 mm or less, the clutch is due for replacement.
